even though i grew up in san diego, until this year i had never really taken the time to explore my own city. having 2 little guys home all summer was the perfect excuse to be a tourist.
one thing that i was determined to take advantage of was the residents free tuesdays at the balboa park museums. each tuesday a handful of museums are free and rotate on a schedule by 1st tuesday, 2nd tuesday, etc. we had a few misses, but all in all the boys really loved heading down to the park and learning something new. i’ve loved it to!
for those of you who have never been to balboa park or even san diego, it is phenomenal. it is known as the largest “urban cultural park” in the US and is home to 15 major museums, renowned performing arts venues, beautiful gardens and the world famous San Diego Zoo. the setting is breathtaking with beautiful spanish colonial architecture from the late 1800′s and early 1900′s.
so far we have visited the following museums:
typically we arrive by 10, bring a lunch to picnic somewhere in the park, and are home by the early afternoon. it really is a perfect summer activity for young kids! they are entertained, educated, and excited about seeing new things.
i think i look forward to our museum days as much as the boys!
what has been your go-to outing this summer?
